Signs of the Prairie Pothole Region

Travels across North Dakota brought us to a sign that read 91 miles of road construction—gives another meaning to the “Prairie PotholeRegion” (PPR). The PPR runs from north central Iowa to central Alberta and our path from MN to Calgary certainly covered a large portion of this region. The PPR is a result of glaciation events 12,000 years ago when glaciers retreated, leaving small wetland depressions (sloughs as we call them in the south). The area has since been substantially altered for agricultural use leaving acres and acres of fields and crops (Canola is a favorite), and miles and miles of roads (PPR does not refer to road potholes) which lead to bugs (my poor shiny car)!

Awesome canola field!
Killed our share in N.D.; better than lovebugs :)
How does one entertain oneself while driving across the repetitive fields of the PPR? Signage; which brings me back to the beginning….91 miles or road construction…yes, that was the sign. Think about it; at 45 mph that is over 2 hours of road construction.  How can one really work on 91 miles of road at one time?  Needless to say it gave us time to explore other signs along the way.
Gave us time to walk, read, relax and chat!
Random golf course signs were visible across North Dakota, but I never really saw the golf course; maybe golf is a different sport in North Dakota. Did you know according to Golf Link there are 123 golf courses in North Dakota? My question is how many people golf in ND and how long is the season?  My apologies folks, I’m not exactly sure why I asked these questions since I don’t know the answer and I’m not willing to spend time to find out!

Well, here’s another one for ya –

Right about now is when I started missing my boys; I just know that we could have had some fun with that one!  Mom and I opted for just viewing them from “this” side of the fence at the National Buffalo Museum in Jamestown, ND.

Besides, with this guy peering over our shoulders, there was a little intimidation!

A little farther down the road, we felt a little more centered after seeing this one!

We were a little down when we reached this one, but then...

With a prosperous future ahead of us, we opted for an exploration of our heritage at the Scandinavian Heritage Park in Why Not Minot, ND.

No, it's not the nose, it's just that I must journey on to Saskatchewan!
Round barns are so picturesque!

Look mom, he's not so big!
Props for the remake of Godzilla?
It's snowing, let's get out of here. Oh, my bad, it's potash!
We made it to CALGARY!
Time to rest in the overflow parking
Watch out Calgary, here we come, eh?
